About

Austin Klewan is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist who was born and raised in Montclair, New Jersey. Klewan gained a strong foundation for jazz while studying saxophone with Mike Lee, as well as within the Jazz House Kids organization. After graduating high school from the Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida, Klewan attended Northwestern University from 2017 to 2021. There, he studied saxophone and clarinet under Victor Goines, began teaching himself the flute, and developed as a composer and arranger.

During his time at Northwestern, Klewan performed with, sang with, and arranged music for musicians such as Victor Goines, Sherman Irby, Don Vappie, Brianna Thompson, and the vocalist Kenny Washington. In 2018, he was awarded a Luminarts Fellowship in Jazz Improvisation, a prestigious honor given to a select top group of Chicago musicians once per year. In the summer of 2020, Klewan co-led (AK) Squared, the winning group of the 2020 Detroit Jazz Festival Collegiate Combo Competition. He sang and played saxophone with the group at the 2020 Detroit Jazz Festival.

Klewan also has starred as saxophonist and co-lead vocalist of the Chicago-based pop/soul group Honey Butter. The group has released eight songs, including a five-song EP, that have garnered millions of streams on Spotify. Honey Butter has regularly performed in the city of Chicago, as well as at Northwestern University's Dillo Day in 2018 alongside performers such as Daniel Caesar and Joey Bada$$.

After graduating with a Bachelor's degree from Northwestern in June 2021, Klewan relocated to Los Angeles, where he has worked as a music performer, educator, composer, and recording artist. He can be seen performing locally and throughout California and beyond with various group and artists. Through understanding of the music tradition and awareness of the present moment, Klewan aims to give his audience a memorable experience with every performance, no matter how large or small.
